The Rafael Verdera was launched in 1841 in Ibiza, making her the oldest active sailing vessel in the Spanish fleet today. Originally built as a traditional working boat for coastal trade in the Balearic Islands, she transported goods such as food supplies, wine, oil, and other essential cargo between islands and mainland ports.
Over her long life, she has undergone several transformations in both name and rig. She has sailed under different identities, including Veloz and later María, adapting to the needs of each era—sometimes as a cargo vessel, sometimes as a passenger boat. In the early 20th century, she was also known locally as Sa Balandreta, serving the Palma–Ibiza route carrying goods during the post-war period.
In 1932, she received her current name, Rafael Verdera, in memory of a former owner. As maritime needs changed, the vessel was progressively refitted—from traditional sail plans to more modern configurations, and later even fitted with engines—while always preserving her essential character as a sailing ship.
In 1985, the vessel was acquired by the Arizmendi family in Ibiza, who began a long and careful restoration project. Since then, she has been brought back to sailing condition as a living heritage ship, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern safety and comfort standards.
Today, the Rafael Verdera continues to sail the Mediterranean as a heritage charter yacht, offering guests the rare opportunity to experience nearly two centuries of maritime history still alive at sea.
